First and foremost we want to say THANK YOU! Thank you to all of you for making The Pink Moose possible. For helping us grow. Giving us continued opportunity. For trusting us to help you with your home decor and letting us be a small part of making your house a home. We appreciate your constant support and can’t wait to continue to be a part of your home as we expand.
Where We Have Been
When Cody and I started The Pink Moose in January of 2014, we never could have imagined where this business would take us. We thought we would be making small home decor, wreaths, signs, table decor, and crocheted items. At one of our first shows, a farmers market, we had a customer tell us, “Your booth is Pinterest heaven!” That has always been one of my favorite compliments.
A Farmers Market – Refinished Furniture
At that same farmers market is where refinishing furniture started for us. I had an old island from college that was in our garage. You know, the small wood kind on castors with a bar for towels. All of its finish had worn off. I saw a picture on Pinterest of a piece with a flower stained on the top. I decided to try it. Cody said, “You have never refinished furniture…” I told him I didn’t care and I was sure I could figure it out. Any of you who know me know I have been described as stubborn, strong willed, determined, persistent… I would like to say that I am a go-getter, lol!
Well I tried it and it came out great. I painted the base in a pretty teal blue with latex paint and then did some research on sealing the top using a poly. Needless to say, I have learned a LOT since then (including how to take better photos!) and no longer use any of the products I started with. Anyway, we took the island to the farmers market where, early in the day, a lady came up to our booth and said, “I hate refinished furniture and I have to have that!” Cody helped her load it, looked at me and said, “Well, I guess you are doing that again!”
Carpentry – Gates and Doors
Our gates are a similar story. Cody made two gates for our two story house since we had a 6 month old daughter at the time. I was looking for more items to put on our Etsy shop. I asked him if he would make another one. He said sure but that he didn’t think anyone would buy one. Here we are 3 1/2 years later having sold over 400 gates and full size barn doors. We have taken on so much carpentry work that we hired Sam in January.
The carpentry and furniture refinishing have evolved into custom built furniture, as well as lots of fun wine barrel decor. We do not create many small home decor pieces these days, but instead do a lot of vintage finds for our smaller home decor. We love how our business has evolved and grown. Adding classes to teach furniture painting techniques on make and take pieces of home decor has been our most recent addition. As a teacher by trade (high school PE for 10 years), this has become one of my favorite parts of our business.
So what is the next growth phase for The Pink Moose?! We are expanding into Kansas! Crazy, right?! This decision has come about in a unique way.
My parents (I am an only child) came to us a month ago and told us my dad would be retiring in about 9 months. They then explained that they plan to sell their house, everything in it, buy a 5th wheel camper, and travel the country for an indefinite amount of time. Whoa! Still crazy, right?! My first reaction was excitement. Excitement for them to travel the country and then excitement that we would probably be traveling the country more than we planned. And not just for the next show!
Then it sunk in that my parents wouldn’t be around on a daily basis. My mom is my best friend and she helps with the girls. And I cried. Honestly, I cried off and on for several days. My own sadness never took away from my excitement but it was an adjustment for me to wrap my head around (another little known Jen fact – I don’t do well with change!). I called Cody and gave him my parents’ news. He said, “Whoa!” Right?!
That spurred conversation for us about a new adventure of our own. Cody was ready for a change in his career but didn’t want to tell me as he has always taken care of me and the girls. ALWAYS! He even bought me a brand new car before we were even engaged! Cody knew finding a new job would mean relocating for us, which he didn’t want to do because of my closeness to my parents. We had talked for a couple years about the possibility of moving. Moving for job opportunities for Cody, growth for The Pink Moose, and better cost of living for our family, which would all, in turn, provide more opportunity for our girls.
We made the decision that day to take the plunge and move. Cody started a nationwide search targeting some specific areas we were interested in. The Kansas City area was in our top 5 list. Cody recently had an interview and was offered a job in Leavenworth where we also found the house of our dreams. You guessed it, we are moving to Leavenworth! So exciting! I mean really, really exciting! I have hardly been able to contain myself for a week now and am so excited to finally be able to share this with all of you.
Do you remember this picture?! This is going to be our new home! 154 Year Old Victorian! I will have so much to blog about and share with you!
We will still have a presence in Colorado! Our amazing carpenter, Sam, is staying on board with us. He will continue to do gates and full size barn doors as well as custom furniture builds in Colorado. Cody’s family is still in Colorado, which means we will be back on a regular basis. We plan to do a couple shows in Colorado each year. And, as always, we are available online for all our paint products, wine barrel products, and more. We have been shipping all over the country since the beginning and are happy to continue to do so.
What does this mean when we get to Kansas? We have lots of ideas for Kansas! Nothing is set in stone yet but we will keep you updated as we get settled there. What we do know is that we will continue to refinish furniture and hunt for vintage treasures. We will continue to do shows all over the country. Being in Kansas will open up the opportunity for us to do shows in more places. What we do know is that our next show is in Kansas City and we had it scheduled before we decided to move! We will be at Market Beautiful (formerly known as Vintage Whites Market). You will also want to be sure to follow us on our blog to see our beautiful new home we are over the moon about.
We have had a national presence via shipping since conception. Our national presence with shows began in 2015 and will continue to grow. This move will give us the opportunity to expand the shows we can reach so we will get to meet more of you! As always, we will continue to ship nationally. We are excited to have a presence in two states and who knows what that will lead too!
Thank you for your continued support as we start on this new journey. We welcome any questions you may have and look forward to keeping you updated on this great adventure!
